Break-even math
Shopify Plus Pricing: Real Total Cost and Break-Even
What Shopify Plus really costs: plan fee, processing, and third-party fees, plus the break-even revenue that decides if Plus is worth it. Calculator inside.
Current plan, all-in: /mo · Plus: /mo
Break-even revenue: /mo
Enter the Plus processing rate from your own quote — Shopify doesn't publish one, and that number decides everything below.
Published US prices as read from shopify.com/pricing on 2026-07-18; Plus "from $2,300/mo," rate quoted per merchant. Third-party-gateway fees from the same page, same date: 2% / 1% / 0.6% by plan, 0.2% on Plus, added on top of your gateway's own rate. Every field is editable — your statement beats this page. Plus's own processing rate is negotiated and unpublished; for a real anchor, one Plus merchant's 2026 online rate ran 2.25% + 30¢ (2.95% on Amex and premium cards, 3.49% + 49¢ on PayPal), unchanged since 2020.
A 121-comment r/shopify thread asked: “People who use Shopify Plus. Is it worth it for you? 2300USD monthly!” The answers put break-even anywhere from $100k to $800k a month — an 8x spread — and exactly one commenter derived their number from their own margins. The top comment had it right: it’s “just a math problem.” Here’s the problem, solved.
What Shopify Plus actually costs
Shopify publishes plan fees and card rates; the “real total cost” is those two lines added up at your revenue. Here are the current published US numbers, dated, so you are not working from a screenshot someone posted in 2021:
| Plan | Plan fee /mo | Online card rate | Third-party gateway fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | 2.9% + 30¢ | +2% |
| Grow | $105 | 2.7% + 30¢ | +1% |
| Advanced | $399 | 2.5% + 30¢ | +0.6% |
| Plus | from $2,300 | quoted per merchant | +0.2% |
Source: shopify.com/pricing, read 2026-07-18. The third-party column is the fee Shopify adds on top of an outside gateway’s own rate. Every number here is public except the Plus card rate. That one you get from your own quote, which is why no folklore figure can hand you the total. So is Shopify Plus worth it? On fees alone, only above the revenue where its lower rate pays back its higher plan fee. That crossover is your break-even.
The formula
Two plans differ in a fixed fee and a processing rate. Plus costs more per month and processes cheaper per dollar — so there’s one revenue level where the lines cross:
Break-even revenue = (Plus fee − current fee) ÷ (your rate − Plus’s quoted rate)
At Advanced ($399/mo, 2.5% + 30¢) against Plus at $2,300/mo with a 2.25% quote: $1,901 ÷ 0.0025 = $760,400 a month. Get quoted 2.15% instead and it drops to $543,143. The quote is the decision — which is why folklore numbers from other people’s negotiations are worthless.
The clause that turns break-even into a window
That formula assumes the plan fee is flat. Enterprise contracts often aren’t. The common structure is the flat fee or a percentage of revenue, whichever is greater — so the fee stays flat right up until you grow into it, then starts climbing with every dollar you add.
That single clause changes the shape of the answer. Take the same Advanced-vs-Plus case, now with a 0.3% revenue share:
- $2,300 ÷ 0.3% = $766,667/mo — below that the flat fee is bigger, so nothing changes and break-even lands at $760,400 as before.
- Above it you’re paying 0.3% of revenue instead of $2,300. Your processing saving is 0.25% of revenue, and the cheaper plan still owes its $399. So Plus is ahead by $399 − 0.05% of revenue.
- $399 ÷ 0.05% = $798,000/mo — where that hits zero.
So Plus is cheaper on fees between $760,400 and $798,000 a month, and above that it costs more again. Not a threshold you cross once: a window you can grow out of. A store scaling hard could clear break-even and be back underwater two quarters later, with nothing in the dashboard mentioning it.
Whether your contract has this clause, and at what percentage, is in your paperwork — it isn’t on the pricing page, and I’m not going to invent a rate for you. The calculator’s revenue-share field ships blank for that reason. Leave it empty and you get the plain flat-fee comparison; fill it in and you get the window.
Why nobody’s number transfers
Shopify doesn’t publish a Plus processing rate — the pricing page says “most competitive rates,” full stop. Every folklore figure embeds someone else’s negotiated quote, someone else’s average order value, and someone else’s per-transaction fees. Your statement and your quote are the only inputs that produce your answer. That’s what the calculator above is for: published plan prices are pre-filled and dated, the Plus rate field is deliberately blank.
The same principle governs the number on the ad side. Your break-even ROAS is the revenue-to-spend ratio below which ad-driven orders lose money. It is one division on your own contribution margin, not a benchmark you can borrow. Different costs, same refusal to trust folklore.
One more fork the folklore skips: which processor you use. The published card rates are Shopify Payments rates. On a third-party gateway, your gateway keeps its own rate and Shopify adds a fee on top — 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus — so the Plus fee case becomes a fixed 0.4-point saving, no quote required. The calculator’s processor toggle runs both shapes.
What the fee math doesn’t decide
A minority of stores buy Plus below the fee break-even for real reasons: B2B tooling, checkout customization, API limits, multi-store expansion. If that’s you, price those features honestly on their own — a fee argument that doesn’t clear shouldn’t be rescued by a features argument nobody quantified. And the same arithmetic runs any platform decision: Magento or WooCommerce hosting-plus-extensions against Shopify’s bundled fees, or simply staying on Advanced. Swap the fixed cost and the effective rate; the formula doesn’t care whose logo is on the invoice.
Quick answers
What revenue justifies Shopify Plus?
There is no universal number. Break-even is the plan-fee gap divided by your processing savings: at Advanced ($399, 2.5%) versus Plus at $2,300 with a 2.25% quote, that's $1,901 ÷ 0.25% ≈ $760k a month. A better quote moves it a lot — which is why the folklore spans 8x.
Is Plus ever worth it below the fee break-even?
Sometimes — but then you're buying features, not savings: B2B and expansion-store tooling, checkout customization, higher API limits. Price those against alternatives on their own; don't let a rep fold them into a fee argument the math doesn't support.
Does the same math work for Magento, WooCommerce, or staying on Advanced?
Yes — it's platform-cost arithmetic, not a Shopify feature. Put any stack's fixed monthly cost (hosting, licenses, extensions) and its effective processing rate into the same two slots. Dedicated comparisons are coming; the formula doesn't change.
The fine print — where these numbers come from
Published US prices read from shopify.com/pricing on 2026-07-18: Basic $39, Grow $105, Advanced $399, Plus from $2,300/mo; online card rates 2.9% / 2.7% / 2.5% + 30¢. Plus's processing rate is quoted per merchant — Shopify publishes no number.
The folklore spread — $100k/mo to $700–800k/mo — comes from one r/shopify thread (Nov 2025, 121 comments). Exactly one commenter derived the number from their own margins.
